I am looking into buying a 2x72 grinder for vertical and horizontal applications.
I am considering a Velocity or the Middle range grinder from Samuel Lessard.
If anyone has experience with either, I would love to hear about it.
    Cheers,

    Hey @Jeandm

Type in grinders in the forum search, you’ll see threads upon threads of grinder talk. If you’re in Canada there’s Vashti grinders and Nexus grinders.

Some have full packages. Some don’t. So with the latter you will have to factor in the HP motor you’re going to need, and your electric setup if you’re going to be 120v or 240v.

My suggestion is 1 1/2 hp minimum, 2 HP optimal. If you can justify the expense definitely consider a VFD.

That’s not to say you cannot make it work with a 1HP motor and no VFD, because you can. Just always go as far as your budget will allow.

    Cheers,

    Griff

    Hi Griff,

Thank you for your response. Yes, I was reading through a bunch of threads (where you are very active, thanks!) about grinders. I am in Canada and not too far from Vashti actually. They are definitely on the pricey side, but everyone seems to speak very highly of their stuff (the Canadian version of Brodbeck? ). I was mostly curious if anyone around has some feedback on Velocity grinder? I don't seem to find much about them.

thanks again for your help, the motor recommendation is most welcome. The 120 vs 240 is not a big deal but the single phase vs triple phase is a bigger question mark at this point.

You can run a grinder on 120v Single phase motor. It’ll just be one speed.

You’ll need to go 3 phase if you want a VFD.

Until Maritime Knife Supply started business with the Velocity grinder I had never heard of them, and sadly as such I don’t know anyone who has one.

    I have a Nexus and I’m very happy with it. I run a 2 HP 240v 3 Phase Motor on a KBAC -27D VFD.

Good luck with your build

I have a Velocity grinder. It has a 240v 2 hp motor with a KBAC vfd and it has worked great. Tracks easily and lots of adjustments for the tool rest. There is a YouTube video featuring it but I can’t recall who posted it.

Thank you both for the feedback.
I ended up going with a Vashti Pilot with a 2HP+VFD on 230V

Congratulations - looks like a great package. Once you've got it up and running, maybe you could let us know how it went?
