OK so I figured this out from my latest project upsetting me as I was buffing it.

If your using a bench grinder as I am for your grinding needs also buffing here's a trick. With the shelf up on the buffing wheel no matter if you have a 6-10 inch grinder take a small 1/4-1/2 once by 3 inch long chink of flat wood, C clamp it to the shelf so it's just about 3mm from the wheel, and start your buffing and or grinding. This saves the blade edge and also allows you to have a stable place for your knife without worry of scratches to your finish.
