Knife Style Question

    Hello All,

    I was given a 36-inch piece of 01 tool steel that's 1/4" by 1 1/2". This stuff is thick, I'm wondering what style of knife is best for this thick of steel? Has anyone used this for stock removal? if so what did you make?

    I'm debating putting this in my forge and trying to thin this out to something more usable.

    Thoughts?

    I have done a Nessmuck variety with that size material or 2" wide. good skinner and decent shopper for firewood

    Plus you can taper both the blade and handle which looks pretty good

    Made my first knife out of that exact stuff -- a hefty camp style. I also like the Nessmuck and Bowie ideas. I still have some of this material and am planning on a variation of the original Camp. Check out the Bark River Bravo series for some interesting design ideas.

    With 36" piece you could also throw in a hybrid camp chopper/cleaver affair that could be used in place of a hatchet.

    Thanks for the ideas guys. I guess this should really be heavy duty knife from a thick piece of steel. I have a good friend who is a big camper, I think I will make him a camp knife.

    That is one badass looking knife...er... cleaver..i mean axe... Nice blade. I want to make one now. I guess you'd have to freehand the bevel to get it to follow the curve to the tip like that.

    The straight portion is easy in a jig but that curved bit will be faster by hand or something that holds the blade and lets you pivot about the tip

    is there any reason why you couldn't grind with the edge pointing down? that way you could grind the long part normally and then just put the knife in another jig "standing up". Is there a reason why one wouldn't do that? You got me thinking about this now.

    no reason at all i can think of, I grind both ways and only sliced two belts apart so far

    No reason you couldnt make a good hunting knife out of that. I recently read about some of Karl Anderson's knives, and he stated that many of his hunters are close to 1/4 thick at the ricasso, but have a good distal taper. This gives you the finer tip section for slicing and more detailed work, but still enough backbone to have a lot of strength.
